I actually enjoyed this course and as a result gained a lot of knowledge of gender roles in society. Learning about girls and reading stories about them was different. I never really thought anything of certain topics we discussed in class but as they arose and I gained a better understanding, I found myself wanting to learn more. Society has expectations of both genders, and sometimes we get compared to each other. I gained a different perspective on certain topics, just being in a class with majority of girls and learning specifically about the female gender. I’m used to having such a masculine type of thinking and growing up with my brother that’s how it has always been. Whenever a debate might arise, I will definitely take a step back and think about it from both sides before voicing my opinion. From the various readings and projects we have done, I have gotten to see how stereotypes often influence the way people think and expectations in general. We see so commonly how stereotypes are present in our society. Women in Lit has helped me understand that our world is always changing, and that the best is just thing to do is be accepting and don’t change who we are. Specifically for my project, I have gotten to see how people’s expectations and views of beauty have changed over time. Society has contributed to the large fact that many people are insecure about themselves. They feel the need to change the way they look to fit in or to become what society expects of them. Many people believe there is only type of beauty and that is completely wrong. As we’ve seen from history, beauty is changing, there is no constant and many things can be considered beautiful.
